Eye of Sahara - Luna Nouakchott

Eye of Sahara the real Atlantis?

The civilization of Atlantis was mentioned for the first time in the unfinished book Timaeus by the famous Greek philosopher Plato. Written in 360 BC, the book details the wise Solon’s travels to Egypt, where he met a priestess. The priestess was talking about a great civilization whose people had fled after a great disaster. To the north lay a broad mountain range and a river flowing southward, passing through or just above the city. However, the priestess explained that the city was swallowed by the sea 9,000 years ago.

Some historians and anthropologists suggest that Atlantis may have been located in a location known as the “Eye of the Sahara.”

One of the Oldest Center of Trade

Cinguetti was founded in 777 AD. The name Chinguetti means “bow of horses” in the Azeri language, an extinct dialect of Soninke that is heavily mixed with Berber. By the 11th century Chinguetti had become the trading center of the confederation of Berber tribes known as the Sanhaja. They eventually united with the Almoravids, represented by Abdullah ibn Yasin, who would eventually control an empire stretching from modern-day Senegal to Andalusia in modern-day Spain. The city’s plain and simple architecture reflects the religious beliefs of the Almoravids, who spread the Maliki rite of Sunni Islam throughout the Western Maghreb.
